Zoltan Papp f23aaa9ae7 [client] iOS: structured ResolvedIPs collection for domain routes (#6090)
* [client] iOS: structured ResolvedIPs collection for domain routes

Replace comma-joined ResolvedIPs string with a gomobile-friendly
ResolvedIPs collection (Add/Get/Size), mirroring the Android bridge
in client/android/network_domains.go.

This allows the iOS app to match domain-route resolved IPs against
connected peer routes without parsing CSV strings, fixing the route
status indicator for dynamic (DNS) routes.

* [client] iOS: align dynamic route exposure with Android bridge

For dynamic (DNS) routes the Swift side previously received
"invalid Prefix" as the Network value, forcing UI code to special-case
that sentinel. The Android bridge uses Domains.SafeString() instead so
peer.routes entries (which also derive from Domains.SafeString()) match
directly. Mirror that here.

Also fix the resolved IP lookup: resolvedDomains is keyed by the
resolved domain (e.g. api.ipify.org), not the configured pattern
(e.g. *.ipify.org). Group entries by ParentDomain like the daemon does
in client/server/network.go, so wildcard route patterns get their
resolved IPs populated.

Zoltan Papp a547fc74ed [client] Use ctx.Err() instead of gRPC codes.Canceled to detect shutdown (#6019)
Detecting shutdown by inspecting the gRPC status code conflates a local
context cancellation with a server- or proxy-sent codes.Canceled. When
the latter occurs (e.g. an intermediary proxy resets the stream), the
retry loop silently terminates and the client never reconnects.

Switch to ctx.Err() in the signal Receive loop and management Sync/Job
handlers, and stop matching gRPC Canceled/DeadlineExceeded in the flow
client's isContextDone helper. With this change, a server-sent Canceled
is treated as a transient error and the backoff retry loop continues.

Zoltan Papp a21f6ecb0a [client] release Status.mux before invoking notifier callbacks (#6039)
The Status recorder used to fire notifier callbacks while holding d.mux:
- notifyPeerListChanged / notifyPeerStateChangeListeners ran from inside
the locked section of every Update*/AddPeerStateRoute/etc.
- notifyAddressChanged ran from UpdateLocalPeerState and CleanLocalPeerState
  while d.mux was held.
- onConnectionChanged was registered with a defer above defer d.mux.Unlock,
so it executed before the mutex was released in the Mark*Connected/
  Disconnected helpers.
- notifyPeerStateChangeListeners did a blocking channel send under d.mux,
so a slow subscriber stalled every other d.mux holder.

A listener that re-enters the recorder (e.g. calls GetFullStatus from
within a callback) deadlocks against d.mux, and any callback that takes
longer than expected stalls every other state query for its duration.

Capture the values needed for notification under the lock, release d.mux,
then call the notifier. Build per-peer router-state snapshots inside the
lock and dispatch them via dispatchRouterPeers afterwards. The router-peer
channel send stays blocking, but now happens outside d.mux so a slow
consumer cannot stall any other d.mux holder, and no peer state
transitions are silently dropped.

The notifier itself is unchanged: its internal state was already protected
by its own locks, and the field d.notifier is set once in NewRecorder and
never reassigned, so reading it without d.mux is safe.

Also fix a pre-existing race in Test_notifier_RemoveListener /
Test_notifier_SetListener: setListener spawns a goroutine that writes
listener.peers, but the tests read listener.peers without waiting for it.

Zoltan Papp 8fc4265995 [relay] evict foreign client cache on disconnect (#6015)
* [relay] evict foreign client cache on disconnect

When a foreign relay's TCP connection drops, the manager's
onServerDisconnected handler only triggered reconnect logic for the
home server; the disconnected foreign entry stayed in the relayClients
cache. Subsequent OpenConn calls reused the closed client until the
60-second cleanup tick evicted it, breaking peer connectivity through
that relay for up to a minute.

Evict the foreign entry from the cache on disconnect so the next
OpenConn dials a fresh client.

Also:
- Make the reconnect backoff cap configurable via WithMaxBackoffInterval
ManagerOption; the previous hard-coded 60s constant forced
TestAutoReconnect to sleep ~61s. Test now polls Ready() and finishes
  in ~2s.
- Add NB_HOME_RELAY_SERVERS env var that overrides the relay URL list
received from management, so a peer can be pinned to a specific home
relay (used by the netbird-conn-lab Edge 4 reproducer).

* [client] treat empty NB_HOME_RELAY_SERVERS as unset

Returning (urls=[], ok=true) when the env var contained only separators or
whitespace caused callers to wipe the mgmt-provided relay list, leaving the
peer with no relays. Treat a parsed-empty result the same as an unset env.

Zoltan Papp 9c50819f20 Don't mark management disconnected on transient job stream errors (#6005)
The JOB stream is a separate channel from the SYNC stream. Server-side
EOF or other transient errors on the JOB stream do not indicate that
the management connection is unhealthy — the SYNC stream remains the
authoritative state signal.

Previously, a JOB stream EOF would call notifyDisconnected and the
client would emit OnConnecting to the UI. The backoff retry would
reconnect the JOB stream, but handleJobStream never calls notifyConnected
on success, so the UI was stuck on "Connecting" until the next SYNC
event or health check.

Keep notifyDisconnected for codes.PermissionDenied since IsLoginRequired
relies on managementError to detect expired auth.

Zoltan Papp f732b01a05 [management] unify peer-update test timeout via constant (#5952)
peerShouldReceiveUpdate waited 500ms for the expected update message,
and every outer wrapper across the management/server test suite paired
it with a 1s goroutine-drain timeout. Both were too tight for slower
CI runners (MySQL, FreeBSD, loaded sqlite), producing intermittent
"Timed out waiting for update message" failures in tests like
TestDNSAccountPeersUpdate, TestPeerAccountPeersUpdate, and
TestNameServerAccountPeersUpdate.

Introduce peerUpdateTimeout (5s) next to the helper and use it both in
the helper and in every outer wrapper so the two timeouts stay in sync.
Only runs down on failure; passing tests return as soon as the channel
delivers, so there is no slowdown on green runs.

Zoltan Papp 1165058fad [client] fix port collision in TestUpload (#5950)
* [debug] fix port collision in TestUpload

TestUpload hardcoded :8080, so it failed deterministically when anything
was already on that port and collided across concurrent test runs.
Bind a :0 listener in the test to get a kernel-assigned free port, and
add Server.Serve so tests can hand the listener in without reaching
into unexported state.

* [debug] drop test-only Server.Serve, use SERVER_ADDRESS env

The previous commit added a Server.Serve method on the upload-server,
used only by TestUpload. That left production with an unused function.
Reserve an ephemeral loopback port in the test, release it, and pass
the address through SERVER_ADDRESS (which the server already reads).
A small wait helper ensures the server is accepting connections before
the upload runs, so the close/rebind gap does not cause a false failure.

Zoltan Papp 703353d354 [flow] fix goroutine leak in TestReceive_ProtocolErrorStreamReconnect (#5951)
The Receive goroutine could outlive the test and call t.Logf after
teardown, panicking with "Log in goroutine after ... has completed".
Register a cleanup that waits for the goroutine to exit; ordering is
LIFO so it runs after client.Close, which is what unblocks Receive.

Zoltan Papp 2fb50aef6b [client] allow UDP packet loss in TestICEBind_HandlesConcurrentMixedTraffic (#5953)
The test writes 500 packets per family and asserted exact-count
delivery within a 5s window, even though its own comment says "Some
packet loss is acceptable for UDP". On FreeBSD/QEMU runners the writer
loops cannot always finish all 500 before the 5s deadline closes the
readers (we have seen 411/500 in CI).

The real assertion of this test is the routing check — IPv4 peer only
gets v4- packets, IPv6 peer only gets v6- packets — which remains
strict. Replace the exact-count assertions with a >=80% delivery
threshold so runner speed variance no longer causes false failures.

Zoltan Papp 5a89e6621b [client] Supress ICE signaling (#5820)
* [client] Suppress ICE signaling and periodic offers in force-relay mode

When NB_FORCE_RELAY is enabled, skip WorkerICE creation entirely,
suppress ICE credentials in offer/answer messages, disable the
periodic ICE candidate monitor, and fix isConnectedOnAllWay to
only check relay status so the guard stops sending unnecessary offers.

* [client] Dynamically suppress ICE based on remote peer's offer credentials

Track whether the remote peer includes ICE credentials in its
offers/answers. When remote stops sending ICE credentials, skip
ICE listener dispatch, suppress ICE credentials in responses, and
exclude ICE from the guard connectivity check. When remote resumes
sending ICE credentials, re-enable all ICE behavior.

* [client] Fix nil SessionID panic and force ICE teardown on relay-only transition

Fix nil pointer dereference in signalOfferAnswer when SessionID is nil
(relay-only offers). Close stale ICE agent immediately when remote peer
stops sending ICE credentials to avoid traffic black-hole during the
ICE disconnect timeout.

* [client] Add relay-only fallback check when ICE is unavailable

Ensure the relay connection is supported with the peer when ICE is disabled to prevent connectivity issues.

* [client] Add tri-state connection status to guard for smarter ICE retry (#5828)

* [client] Add tri-state connection status to guard for smarter ICE retry

Refactor isConnectedOnAllWay to return a ConnStatus enum (Connected,
Disconnected, PartiallyConnected) instead of a boolean. When relay is
up but ICE is not (PartiallyConnected), limit ICE offers to 3 retries
with exponential backoff then fall back to hourly attempts, reducing
unnecessary signaling traffic. Fully disconnected peers continue to
retry aggressively. External events (relay/ICE disconnect, signal/relay
reconnect) reset retry state to give ICE a fresh chance.

* [client] Clarify guard ICE retry state and trace log trigger

Split iceRetryState.attempt into shouldRetry (pure predicate) and
enterHourlyMode (explicit state transition) so the caller in
reconnectLoopWithRetry reads top-to-bottom. Restore the original
trace-log behavior in isConnectedOnAllWay so it only logs on full
disconnection, not on the new PartiallyConnected state.

* [client] Extract pure evalConnStatus and add unit tests

Split isConnectedOnAllWay into a thin method that snapshots state and
a pure evalConnStatus helper that takes a connStatusInputs struct, so
the tri-state decision logic can be exercised without constructing
full Worker or Handshaker objects. Add table-driven tests covering
force-relay, ICE-unavailable and fully-available code paths, plus
unit tests for iceRetryState budget/hourly transitions and reset.

* [client] Improve grammar in logs and refactor ICE credential checks

Zoltan Papp 3098f48b25 [client] fix ios network addresses mac filter (#5906)
* fix(client): skip MAC address filter for network addresses on iOS

iOS does not expose hardware (MAC) addresses due to Apple's privacy
restrictions (since iOS 14), causing networkAddresses() to return an
empty list because all interfaces are filtered out by the HardwareAddr
check. Move networkAddresses() to platform-specific files so iOS can
skip this filter.

Zoltan Papp 13539543af [client] Fix/grpc retry (#5750)
* [client] Fix flow client Receive retry loop not stopping after Close

Use backoff.Permanent for canceled gRPC errors so Receive returns
immediately instead of retrying until context deadline when the
connection is already closed. Add TestNewClient_PermanentClose to
verify the behavior.

The connectivity.Shutdown check was meaningless because when the connection is
shut down, c.realClient.Events(ctx, grpc.WaitForReady(true)) on the nex line
already fails with codes.Canceled — which is now handled as a permanent error.
The explicit state check was just duplicating what gRPC already reports
through its normal error path.

* [client] remove WaitForReady from stream open call

grpc.WaitForReady(true) parks the RPC call internally until the
connection reaches READY, only unblocking on ctx cancellation.
This means the external backoff.Retry loop in Receive() never gets
control back during a connection outage — it cannot tick, log, or
apply its retry intervals while WaitForReady is blocking.

Removing it restores fail-fast behaviour: Events() returns immediately
with codes.Unavailable when the connection is not ready, which is
exactly what the backoff loop expects. The backoff becomes the single
authority over retry timing and cadence, as originally intended.

* [client] Add connection recreation and improve flow client error handling

Store gRPC dial options on the client to enable connection recreation
on Internal errors (RST_STREAM/PROTOCOL_ERROR). Treat Unauthenticated,
PermissionDenied, and Unimplemented as permanent failures. Unify mutex
usage and add reconnection logging for better observability.

* [client] Remove Unauthenticated, PermissionDenied, and Unimplemented from permanent error handling

* [client] Fix error handling in Receive to properly re-establish stream and improve reconnection messaging

* Fix test

* [client] Add graceful shutdown handling and test for concurrent Close during Receive

Prevent reconnection attempts after client closure by tracking a `closed` flag. Use `backoff.Permanent` for errors caused by operations on a closed client. Add a test to ensure `Close` does not block when `Receive` is actively running.

* [client] Fix connection swap to properly close old gRPC connection

Close the old `gRPC.ClientConn` after successfully swapping to a new connection during reconnection.

* [client] Reset backoff

* [client] Ensure stream closure on error during initialization

* [client] Add test for handling server-side stream closure and reconnection

Introduce `TestReceive_ServerClosesStream` to verify the client's ability to recover and process acknowledgments after the server closes the stream. Enhance test server with a controlled stream closure mechanism.

* [client] Add protocol error simulation and enhance reconnection test

Introduce `connTrackListener` to simulate HTTP/2 RST_STREAM with PROTOCOL_ERROR for testing. Refactor and rename `TestReceive_ServerClosesStream` to `TestReceive_ProtocolErrorStreamReconnect` to verify client recovery on protocol errors.

* [client] Update Close error message in test for clarity

* [client] Fine-tune the tests

* [client] Adjust connection tracking in reconnection test

* [client] Wait for Events handler to exit in RST_STREAM reconnection test

Ensure the old `Events` handler exits fully before proceeding in the reconnection test to avoid dropped acknowledgments on a broken stream. Add a `handlerDone` channel to synchronize handler exits.

* [client] Prevent panic on nil connection during Close

* [client] Refactor connection handling to use explicit target tracking

Introduce `target` field to store the gRPC connection target directly, simplifying reconnections and ensuring consistent connection reuse logic.

* [client] Rename `isCancellation` to `isContextDone` and extend handling for `DeadlineExceeded`

Refactor error handling to include `DeadlineExceeded` scenarios alongside `Canceled`. Update related condition checks for consistency.

* [client] Add connection generation tracking to prevent stale reconnections

Introduce `connGen` to track connection generations and ensure that stale `recreateConnection` calls do not override newer connections. Update stream establishment and reconnection logic to incorporate generation validation.

* [client] Add backoff reset condition to prevent short-lived retry cycles

Refine backoff reset logic to ensure it only occurs for sufficiently long-lived stream connections, avoiding interference with `MaxElapsedTime`.

* [client] Introduce `minHealthyDuration` to refine backoff reset logic

Add `minHealthyDuration` constant to ensure stream retries only reset the backoff timer if the stream survives beyond a minimum duration. Prevents unhealthy, short-lived streams from interfering with `MaxElapsedTime`.

* [client] IPv6 friendly connection

parsedURL.Hostname() strips IPv6 brackets. For http://[::1]:443, this turns it into ::1:443, which is not a valid host:port target for gRPC. Additionally, fmt.Sprintf("%s:%s", hostname, port) produces a trailing colon when the URL has no explicit port—http://example.com becomes example.com:. Both cases break the initial dial and reconnect paths. Use parsedURL.Host directly instead.

* [client] Add `handlerStarted` channel to synchronize stream establishment in tests

Introduce `handlerStarted` channel in the test server to signal when the server-side handler begins, ensuring robust synchronization between client and server during stream establishment. Update relevant test cases to wait for this signal before proceeding.

* [client] Replace `receivedAcks` map with atomic counter and improve stream establishment sync in tests

Refactor acknowledgment tracking in tests to use an `atomic.Int32` counter instead of a map. Replace fixed sleep with robust synchronization by waiting on `handlerStarted` signal for stream establishment.

* [client] Extract `handleReceiveError` to simplify receive logic

Refactor error handling in `receive` to a dedicated `handleReceiveError` method. Streamlines the main logic and isolates error recovery, including backoff reset and connection recreation.

* [client] recreate gRPC ClientConn on every retry to prevent dual backoff

The flow client had two competing retry loops: our custom exponential
backoff and gRPC's internal subchannel reconnection. When establishStream
failed, the same ClientConn was reused, allowing gRPC's internal backoff
state to accumulate and control dial timing independently.

Changes:
- Consolidate error handling into handleRetryableError, which now
handles context cancellation, permanent errors, backoff reset,
and connection recreation in a single path
- Call recreateConnection on every retryable error so each retry
gets a fresh ClientConn with no internal backoff state
- Remove connGen tracking since Receive is sequential and protected
by a new receiving guard against concurrent calls
- Reduce RandomizationFactor from 1 to 0.5 to avoid near-zero
 backoff intervals

Zoltan Papp 7483fec048 Fix Android internet blackhole caused by stale route re-injection on TUN rebuild (#5865)
extraInitialRoutes() was meant to preserve only the fake IP route
(240.0.0.0/8) across TUN rebuilds, but it re-injected any initial
route missing from the current set. When the management server
advertised exit node routes (0.0.0.0/0) that were later filtered
by the route selector, extraInitialRoutes() re-added them, causing
the Android VPN to capture all traffic with no peer to handle it.

Store the fake IP route explicitly and append only that in notify(),
removing the overly broad initial route diffing.

Zoltan PappandViktor Liu 91f0d5cefd [client] Feature/client metrics (#5512)
* Add client metrics

* Add client metrics system with OpenTelemetry and VictoriaMetrics support

Implements a comprehensive client metrics system to track peer connection
stages and performance. The system supports multiple backend implementations
(OpenTelemetry, VictoriaMetrics, and no-op) and tracks detailed connection
stage durations from creation through WireGuard handshake.

Key changes:
- Add metrics package with pluggable backend implementations
- Implement OpenTelemetry metrics backend
- Implement VictoriaMetrics metrics backend
- Add no-op metrics implementation for disabled state
- Track connection stages: creation, semaphore, signaling, connection ready, and WireGuard handshake
- Move WireGuard watcher functionality to conn.go
- Refactor engine to integrate metrics tracking
- Add metrics export endpoint in debug server

* Add signaling metrics tracking for initial and reconnection attempts

* Reset connection stage timestamps during reconnections to exclude unnecessary metrics tracking

* Delete otel lib from client

* Update unit tests

* Invoke callback on handshake success in WireGuard watcher

* Add Netbird version tracking to client metrics

Integrate Netbird version into VictoriaMetrics backend and metrics labels. Update `ClientMetrics` constructor and metric name formatting to include version information.

* Add sync duration tracking to client metrics

Introduce `RecordSyncDuration` for measuring sync message processing time. Update all metrics implementations (VictoriaMetrics, no-op) to support the new method. Refactor `ClientMetrics` to use `AgentInfo` for static agent data.

* Remove no-op metrics implementation and simplify ClientMetrics constructor

Eliminate unused `noopMetrics` and refactor `ClientMetrics` to always use the VictoriaMetrics implementation. Update associated logic to reflect these changes.

* Add total duration tracking for connection attempts

Calculate total duration for both initial connections and reconnections, accounting for different timestamp scenarios. Update `Export` method to include Prometheus HELP comments.

* Add metrics push support to VictoriaMetrics integration

* [client] anchor connection metrics to first signal received

* Remove creation_to_semaphore connection stage metric

The semaphore queuing stage (Created → SemaphoreAcquired) is no longer
tracked. Connection metrics now start from SignalingReceived. Updated
docs and Grafana dashboard accordingly.

* [client] Add remote push config for metrics with version-based eligibility

Introduce remoteconfig.Manager that fetches a remote JSON config to control
metrics push interval and restrict pushing to a specific agent version
range. When NB_METRICS_INTERVAL is set, remote config is bypassed
entirely for local override.

* [client] Add WASM-compatible NewClientMetrics implementation

Replace NewClientMetrics in metrics.go with a WASM-specific stub in metrics_js.go, returning nil for compatibility with JS builds. Simplify method usage for WASM targets.

* Add missing file

* Update default case in DeploymentType.String to return "unknown" instead of "selfhosted"

* [client] Rework metrics to use timestamped samples instead of histograms

Replace cumulative Prometheus histograms with timestamped point-in-time
samples that are pushed once and cleared. This fixes metrics for sparse
events (connections/syncs that happen once at startup) where rate() and
increase() produced incorrect or empty results.

Changes:
- Switch from VictoriaMetrics histogram library to raw Prometheus text
  format with explicit millisecond timestamps
- Reset samples after successful push (no resending stale data)
- Rename connection_to_handshake → connection_to_wg_handshake
- Add netbird_peer_connection_count metric for ICE vs Relay tracking
- Simplify dashboard: point-based scatter plots, donut pie chart
- Add maxStalenessInterval=1m to VictoriaMetrics to prevent forward-fill
- Fix deployment_type Unknown returning "selfhosted" instead of "unknown"
- Fix inverted shouldPush condition in push.go

* [client] Add InfluxDB metrics backend alongside VictoriaMetrics

Add influxdb.go with timestamped line protocol export for sparse
one-shot events. Restore victoria.go to use proper Prometheus
histograms. Update Grafana dashboards, add InfluxDB datasource,
and update docs.

Co-Authored-By: Claude Opus 4.6 <noreply@anthropic.com>

* [client] Fix metrics issues and update dev docker setup

- Fix StopPush not clearing push state, preventing restart
- Fix race condition reading currentConnPriority without lock in recordConnectionMetrics
- Fix stale comment referencing old metrics server URL
- Update docker-compose for InfluxDB: add scoped tokens, .env config, init scripts
- Rename docker-compose.victoria.yml to docker-compose.yml

* [client] Add anonymised peer tracking to pushed metrics

Introduce peer_id and connection_pair_id tags to InfluxDB metrics.
Public keys are hashed (truncated SHA-256) for anonymisation. The
connection pair ID is deterministic regardless of which side computes
it, enabling deduplication of reconnections in the ICE vs Relay
dashboard. Also pin Grafana to v11.6.0 for file-based provisioning
and fix datasource UID references.

* Remove unused dependencies from go.mod and go.sum

* Refactor InfluxDB ingest pipeline: extract validation logic

- Move line validation logic to `validateLine` and `validateField` helper functions.
- Improve error handling with structured validation and clearer separation of concerns.
- Add stderr redirection for error messages in `create-tokens.sh`.

* Set non-root user in Dockerfile for Ingest service

* Fix Windows CI: command line too long

* Remove Victoria metrics

* Add hashed peer ID as Authorization header in metrics push

* Revert influxdb in docker compose

* Enable gzip compression and authorization validation for metrics push and ingest

* Reducate code of complexity

* Update debug documentation to include metrics.txt description

* Increase `maxBodySize` limit to 50 MB and update gzip reader wrapping logic

* Refactor deployment type detection to use URL parsing for improved accuracy

* Update readme

* Throttle remote config retries on fetch failure

* Preserve first WG handshake timestamp, ignore rekeys

* Skip adding empty metrics.txt to debug bundle in debug mode

* Update default metrics server URL to https://ingest.netbird.io

* Atomic metrics export-and-reset to prevent sample loss between Export and Reset calls

* Fix doc

* Refactor Push configuration to improve clarity and enforce minimum push interval

* Remove `minPushInterval` and update push interval validation logic

* Revert ExportAndReset, it is acceptable data loss

* Fix metrics review issues: rename env var, remove stale infra, add tests

- Rename NB_METRICS_ENABLED to NB_METRICS_PUSH_ENABLED to clarify that
collection is always active (for debug bundles) and only push is opt-in
- Change default config URL from staging to production (ingest.netbird.io)
- Delete broken Prometheus dashboard (used non-existent metric names)
- Delete unused VictoriaMetrics datasource config
- Replace committed .env with .env.example containing placeholder values
- Wire Grafana admin credentials through env vars in docker-compose
- Make metricsStages a pointer to prevent reset-vs-write race on reconnect

- Use deterministic field order in InfluxDB Export (sorted keys)
- Replace Authorization header with X-Peer-ID for metrics push
- Fix ingest server timeout to use time.Second instead of float
- Fix gzip double-close, stale comments, trim log levels

Zoltan Papp fe9b844511 [client] refactor auto update workflow (#5448)
Auto-update logic moved out of the UI into a dedicated updatemanager.Manager service that runs in the connection layer. The
UI no longer polls or checks for updates independently.
The update manager supports three modes driven by the management server's auto-update policy:
No policy set by mgm: checks GitHub for the latest version and notifies the user (previous behavior, now centralized)
mgm enforces update: the "About" menu triggers installation directly instead of just downloading the file — user still initiates the action
mgm forces update: installation proceeds automatically without user interaction
updateManager lifecycle is now owned by daemon, giving the daemon server direct control via a new TriggerUpdate RPC

* Fix DNS probe thread safety and avoid blocking engine sync

Refactor ProbeAvailability to prevent blocking the engine's sync mutex
during slow DNS probes. The probe now derives its context from the
server's own context (s.ctx) instead of accepting one from the caller,
and uses a mutex to ensure only one probe runs at a time — new calls
cancel the previous probe before starting. Also fixes a data race in
Stop() when accessing probeCancel without the probe mutex.

Zoltan Papp 2dbdb5c1a7 [client] Refactor WG endpoint setup with role-based proxy activation (#5277)
* Refactor WG endpoint setup with role-based proxy activation

For relay connections, the controller (initiator) now activates the
wgProxy before configuring the WG endpoint, while the non-controller
(responder) configures the endpoint first with a delayed update, then
activates the proxy after. This prevents the responder from sending
traffic through the proxy before WireGuard is ready to receive it,
avoiding handshake congestion when both sides try to initiate
simultaneously.

For ICE connections, pass hasRelayBackup as the setEndpointNow flag
so the responder sets the endpoint immediately when a relay fallback
exists (avoiding the delayed update path since relay is already
available as backup).

On ICE disconnect with relay fallback, remove the duplicate
wgProxyRelay.Work() calls — the relay proxy is already active from
initial setup, so re-activating it is unnecessary.

In EndpointUpdater, split ConfigureWGEndpoint into explicit
configureAsInitiator and configureAsResponder paths, and add the
setEndpointNow parameter to let the caller control whether the
responder applies the endpoint immediately or defers it. Add unused
SwitchWGEndpoint and RemoveEndpointAddress methods. Remove the
wgConfigWorkaround sleep from the relay setup path.

* Fix redundant wgProxyRelay.Work() call during relay fallback setup

Zoltan Papp e5d4947d60 [client] Optimize Windows DNS performance with domain batching and batch mode (#5264)
* Optimize Windows DNS performance with domain batching and batch mode

Implement two-layer optimization to reduce Windows NRPT registry operations:

1. Domain Batching (host_windows.go):
  - Batch domains per NRPT
  - Reduces NRPT rules by ~97% (e.g., 184 domains: 184 rules → 4 rules)
  - Modified addDNSMatchPolicy() to create batched NRPT entries
  - Added comprehensive tests in host_windows_test.go

2. Batch Mode (server.go):
  - Added BeginBatch/EndBatch methods to defer DNS updates
  - Modified RegisterHandler/DeregisterHandler to skip applyHostConfig in batch mode
  - Protected all applyHostConfig() calls with batch mode checks
  - Updated route manager to wrap route operations with batch calls

* Update tests

* Fix log line

* Fix NRPT rule index to ensure cleanup covers partially created rules

* Ensure NRPT entry count updates even on errors to improve cleanup reliability

* Switch DNS batch mode logging from Info to Debug level

* Fix batch mode to not suppress critical DNS config updates

Batch mode should only defer applyHostConfig() for RegisterHandler/
DeregisterHandler operations. Management updates and upstream nameserver
failures (deactivate/reactivate callbacks) need immediate DNS config
updates regardless of batch mode to ensure timely failover.

Without this fix, if a nameserver goes down during a route update,
the system DNS config won't be updated until EndBatch(), potentially
delaying failover by several seconds.

Or if you prefer a shorter version:

Fix batch mode to allow immediate DNS updates for critical paths

Batch mode now only affects RegisterHandler/DeregisterHandler.
Management updates and nameserver failures always trigger immediate
DNS config updates to ensure timely failover.

* Add DNS batch cancellation to rollback partial changes on errors

Introduces CancelBatch() method to the DNS server interface to handle error
scenarios during batch operations. When route updates fail partway through, the DNS
server can now discard accumulated changes instead of applying partial state. This
prevents leaving the DNS configuration in an inconsistent state when route manager
operations encounter errors.

The changes add error-aware batch handling to prevent partial DNS configuration
updates when route operations fail, which improves system reliability.

Zoltan Papp edce11b34d [client] Refactor/relay conn container (#5271)
* Fix race condition and ensure correct message ordering in
connection establishment

Reorder operations in OpenConn to register the connection before
waiting for peer availability. This ensures:

- Connection is ready to receive messages before peer subscription
completes
- Transport messages and onconnected events maintain proper ordering
- No messages are lost during the connection establishment window
- Concurrent OpenConn calls cannot create duplicate connections

If peer availability check fails, the pre-registered connection is
properly cleaned up.

* Handle service shutdown during relay connection initialization

Ensure relay connections are properly cleaned up when the service is not running by verifying `serviceIsRunning` and removing stale entries from `c.conns` to prevent unintended behaviors.

* Refactor relay client Conn/connContainer ownership and decouple Conn from Client

Conn previously held a direct *Client pointer and called client methods
(writeTo, closeConn, LocalAddr) directly, creating a tight bidirectional
coupling. The message channel was also created externally in OpenConn and
shared between Conn and connContainer with unclear ownership.

Now connContainer fully owns the lifecycle of both the channel and the
Conn it wraps:
- connContainer creates the channel (sized by connChannelSize const)
and the Conn internally via newConnContainer
- connContainer feeds messages into the channel (writeMsg), closes and
  drains it on shutdown (close)
- Conn reads from the channel (Read) but never closes it

Conn is decoupled from *Client by replacing the *Client field with
three function closures (writeFn, closeFn, localAddrFn) that are wired
by newConnContainer at construction time. Write, Close, and LocalAddr
delegate to these closures. This removes the direct dependency while
keeping the identity-check logic: writeTo and closeConn now compare
connContainer pointers instead of Conn pointers to verify the caller
is the current active connection for that peer.

Zoltan Papp 9021bb512b [client] Recreate agent when receive new session id (#4564)
When an ICE agent connection was in progress, new offers were being ignored. This was incorrect logic because the remote agent could be restarted at any time.
In this change, whenever a new session ID is received, the ongoing handshake is closed and a new one is started.

Zoltan Papp e8d301fdc9 [client] Fix/pkg loss (#3338)
The Relayed connection setup is optimistic. It does not have any confirmation of an established end-to-end connection. Peers start sending WireGuard handshake packets immediately after the successful offer-answer handshake.
Meanwhile, for successful P2P connection negotiation, we change the WireGuard endpoint address, but this change does not trigger new handshake initiation. Because the peer switched from Relayed connection to P2P, the packets from the Relay server are dropped and must wait for the next WireGuard handshake via P2P.

To avoid this scenario, the relayed WireGuard proxy no longer drops the packets. Instead, it rewrites the source address to the new P2P endpoint and continues forwarding the packets.

We still have one corner case: if the Relayed server negotiation chooses a server that has not been used before. In this case, one side of the peer connection will be slower to reach the Relay server, and the Relay server will drop the handshake packet.

If everything goes well we should see exactly 5 seconds improvements between the WireGuard configuration time and the handshake time.

Zoltan Papp 998fb30e1e [client] Check the client status in the earlier phase (#4509)
This PR improves the NetBird client's status checking mechanism by implementing earlier detection of client state changes and better handling of connection lifecycle management. The key improvements focus on:

  • Enhanced status detection - Added waitForReady option to StatusRequest for improved client status handling
  • Better connection management - Improved context handling for signal and management gRPC connections• Reduced connection timeouts - Increased gRPC dial timeout from 3 to 10 seconds for better reliability
  • Cleaner error handling - Enhanced error propagation and context cancellation in retry loops

  Key Changes

  Core Status Improvements:
  - Added waitForReady optional field to StatusRequest proto (daemon.proto:190)
  - Enhanced status checking logic to detect client state changes earlier in the connection process
  - Improved handling of client permanent exit scenarios from retry loops

  Connection & Context Management:
  - Fixed context cancellation in management and signal client retry mechanisms
  - Added proper context propagation for Login operations
  - Enhanced gRPC connection handling with better timeout management

  Error Handling & Cleanup:
  - Moved feedback channels to upper layers for better separation of concerns
  - Improved error handling patterns throughout the client server implementation
  - Fixed synchronization issues and removed debug logging

Zoltan Papp ead1c618ba [client] Do not run up cmd if not needed in docker (#4508)
optimizes the NetBird client startup process by avoiding unnecessary login commands when the peer is already authenticated. The changes increase the default login timeout and expand the log message patterns used to detect successful authentication.

- Increased default login timeout from 1 to 5 seconds for more reliable authentication detection
- Enhanced log pattern matching to detect both registration and ready states
- Added extended regex support for more flexible pattern matching
