* Refactor WG endpoint setup with role-based proxy activation
For relay connections, the controller (initiator) now activates the
wgProxy before configuring the WG endpoint, while the non-controller
(responder) configures the endpoint first with a delayed update, then
activates the proxy after. This prevents the responder from sending
traffic through the proxy before WireGuard is ready to receive it,
avoiding handshake congestion when both sides try to initiate
simultaneously.
For ICE connections, pass hasRelayBackup as the setEndpointNow flag
so the responder sets the endpoint immediately when a relay fallback
exists (avoiding the delayed update path since relay is already
available as backup).
On ICE disconnect with relay fallback, remove the duplicate
wgProxyRelay.Work() calls — the relay proxy is already active from
initial setup, so re-activating it is unnecessary.
In EndpointUpdater, split ConfigureWGEndpoint into explicit
configureAsInitiator and configureAsResponder paths, and add the
setEndpointNow parameter to let the caller control whether the
responder applies the endpoint immediately or defers it. Add unused
SwitchWGEndpoint and RemoveEndpointAddress methods. Remove the
wgConfigWorkaround sleep from the relay setup path.
* Fix redundant wgProxyRelay.Work() call during relay fallback setup
* Simplify WireGuard endpoint configuration by removing unused parameters and redundant logic
* Fix WebSocket support by implementing Hijacker interface
Add responsewriter.PassthroughWriter to preserve optional HTTP interfaces
(Hijacker, Flusher, Pusher) when wrapping http.ResponseWriter in middleware.
Without this delegation:
- WebSocket connections fail (can't hijack the connection)
- Streaming breaks (can't flush buffers)
- HTTP/2 push doesn't work
* Add HijackTracker to manage hijacked connections during graceful shutdown
* Refactor HijackTracker to use middleware for tracking hijacked connections
* Refactor server handler chain setup for improved readability and maintainability
When an ICE connection disconnects and falls back to relay, reset the
WireGuard endpoint and handshake watcher if the remote peer's ICE session
has changed. This ensures the controller re-establishes a fresh WireGuard
handshake rather than waiting on a stale endpoint from the previous session.
* Optimize Windows DNS performance with domain batching and batch mode
Implement two-layer optimization to reduce Windows NRPT registry operations:
1. Domain Batching (host_windows.go):
- Batch domains per NRPT
- Reduces NRPT rules by ~97% (e.g., 184 domains: 184 rules → 4 rules)
- Modified addDNSMatchPolicy() to create batched NRPT entries
- Added comprehensive tests in host_windows_test.go
2. Batch Mode (server.go):
- Added BeginBatch/EndBatch methods to defer DNS updates
- Modified RegisterHandler/DeregisterHandler to skip applyHostConfig in batch mode
- Protected all applyHostConfig() calls with batch mode checks
- Updated route manager to wrap route operations with batch calls
* Update tests
* Fix log line
* Fix NRPT rule index to ensure cleanup covers partially created rules
* Ensure NRPT entry count updates even on errors to improve cleanup reliability
* Switch DNS batch mode logging from Info to Debug level
* Fix batch mode to not suppress critical DNS config updates
Batch mode should only defer applyHostConfig() for RegisterHandler/
DeregisterHandler operations. Management updates and upstream nameserver
failures (deactivate/reactivate callbacks) need immediate DNS config
updates regardless of batch mode to ensure timely failover.
Without this fix, if a nameserver goes down during a route update,
the system DNS config won't be updated until EndBatch(), potentially
delaying failover by several seconds.
Or if you prefer a shorter version:
Fix batch mode to allow immediate DNS updates for critical paths
Batch mode now only affects RegisterHandler/DeregisterHandler.
Management updates and nameserver failures always trigger immediate
DNS config updates to ensure timely failover.
* Add DNS batch cancellation to rollback partial changes on errors
Introduces CancelBatch() method to the DNS server interface to handle error
scenarios during batch operations. When route updates fail partway through, the DNS
server can now discard accumulated changes instead of applying partial state. This
prevents leaving the DNS configuration in an inconsistent state when route manager
operations encounter errors.
The changes add error-aware batch handling to prevent partial DNS configuration
updates when route operations fail, which improves system reliability.
* Fix race condition and ensure correct message ordering in
connection establishment
Reorder operations in OpenConn to register the connection before
waiting for peer availability. This ensures:
- Connection is ready to receive messages before peer subscription
completes
- Transport messages and onconnected events maintain proper ordering
- No messages are lost during the connection establishment window
- Concurrent OpenConn calls cannot create duplicate connections
If peer availability check fails, the pre-registered connection is
properly cleaned up.
* Handle service shutdown during relay connection initialization
Ensure relay connections are properly cleaned up when the service is not running by verifying `serviceIsRunning` and removing stale entries from `c.conns` to prevent unintended behaviors.
* Refactor relay client Conn/connContainer ownership and decouple Conn from Client
Conn previously held a direct *Client pointer and called client methods
(writeTo, closeConn, LocalAddr) directly, creating a tight bidirectional
coupling. The message channel was also created externally in OpenConn and
shared between Conn and connContainer with unclear ownership.
Now connContainer fully owns the lifecycle of both the channel and the
Conn it wraps:
- connContainer creates the channel (sized by connChannelSize const)
and the Conn internally via newConnContainer
- connContainer feeds messages into the channel (writeMsg), closes and
drains it on shutdown (close)
- Conn reads from the channel (Read) but never closes it
Conn is decoupled from *Client by replacing the *Client field with
three function closures (writeFn, closeFn, localAddrFn) that are wired
by newConnContainer at construction time. Write, Close, and LocalAddr
delegate to these closures. This removes the direct dependency while
keeping the identity-check logic: writeTo and closeConn now compare
connContainer pointers instead of Conn pointers to verify the caller
is the current active connection for that peer.
* Add gRPC update debouncing mechanism
Implements backpressure handling for peer network map updates to
efficiently handle rapid changes. First update is sent immediately,
subsequent rapid updates are coalesced, ensuring only the latest
update is sent after a 1-second quiet period.
* Enhance unit test to verify peer count synchronization with debouncing and timeout handling
* Debounce based on type
* Refactor test to validate timer restart after pending update dispatch
* Simplify timer reset for Go 1.23+ automatic channel draining
Remove manual channel drain in resetTimer() since Go 1.23+ automatically
drains the timer channel when Stop() returns false, making the
select-case pattern unnecessary.
Add defensive nil checks in ThreadSafeAgent.Close() to prevent panic
when agent field is nil. This can occur during Windows suspend/resume
when network interfaces are disrupted or the pion/ice library returns
nil without error.
Also capture agent pointer in local variable before goroutine execution
to prevent race conditions.
Fixes service crashes on laptop wake-up.
Avoid repeated conversions during route setup. The toInterface helper ensures
the conversion happens only once regardless of how many routes are added
or removed.
Start the WireGuard watcher before configuring the WG endpoint to ensure it captures the initial handshake timestamp.
Previously, the watcher was started after endpoint configuration, causing it to miss the handshake that occurred during setup.
When a deleted peer tries to reconnect, GetUserIDByPeerKey was returning
Internal error instead of NotFound, causing clients to retry indefinitely
instead of recognizing the unrecoverable PermissionDenied error.
This fix:
1. Updates GetUserIDByPeerKey to properly return NotFound when peer doesn't exist
2. Updates Sync handler to convert NotFound to PermissionDenied with message
'peer is not registered', matching the behavior of GetAccountIDForPeerKey
Fixes the regression introduced in v0.61.1 where deleted peers would see:
- Before: 'rpc error: code = Internal desc = failed handling request' (retry loop)
- After: 'rpc error: code = PermissionDenied desc = peer is not registered' (exits)
* Add IPv6 support to UDP WireGuard proxy
Add IPv6 packet header support in UDP raw socket proxy
to handle both IPv4 and IPv6 source addresses.
Refactor error handling in proxy bind implementations
to validate endpoints before acquiring locks.
* Consolidate authentication logic
- Moving auth functions from client/internal to client/internal/auth package
- Creating unified auth.Auth client with NewAuth() constructor
- Replacing direct auth function calls with auth client methods
- Refactoring device flow and PKCE flow implementations
- Updating iOS/Android/server code to use new auth client API
* Refactor PKCE auth and login methods
- Remove unnecessary internal package reference in PKCE flow test
- Adjust context assignment placement in iOS and Android login methods
When Down() and Up() are called in quick succession, the connectWithRetryRuns goroutine could set ErrResetConnection after Down() had cleared the state, causing the subsequent Up() to fail.
Fix by waiting for the goroutine to exit (via clientGiveUpChan) before Down() returns. Uses a 5-second timeout to prevent RPC timeouts while ensuring the goroutine completes in most cases.
- Remove WaitGroup, make SemaphoreGroup a pure semaphore
- Make Add() return error instead of silently failing on context cancel
- Remove context parameter from Done() to prevent slot leaks
- Fix missing Done() call in conn.go error path
The UI can get stuck showing "Connecting" status even after the daemon successfully connects and reports "Connected" status. This occurs because the condition to update the UI to "Connected" state checks the wrong flag.
Expose the profile-manager service for Android. Logout was not part of the manager service implementation. In the future, I recommend moving this logic there.
* Add local lint setup with pre-push hook to catch issues early
Developers can now catch lint issues before pushing, reducing CI failures
and iteration time. The setup uses golangci-lint locally with the same
configuration as CI.
Setup:
- Run `make setup-hooks` once after cloning
- Pre-push hook automatically lints changed files (~90s)
- Use `make lint` to manually check changed files
- Use `make lint-all` to run full CI-equivalent lint
The Makefile auto-installs golangci-lint to ./bin/ using go install to
match the Go version in go.mod, avoiding version compatibility issues.

Health-check connections now send a properly formatted auth message
with a well-known peer ID instead of immediately closing. The server
recognizes this peer ID and handles the connection gracefully with a
debug log instead of error logs.
* Fix engine shutdown deadlock and message handling races
- Release syncMsgMux before waiting for shutdownWg to prevent deadlock
- Check context inside lock in handleSync and receiveSignalEvents
- Prevents nil pointer access when messages arrive during engine stop
Replaces string-based exposed address handling with URL-based InstanceURL() (type url.URL) across relay/server and relay/healthcheck; adds SchemeREL/SchemeRELS constants; updates getInstanceURL to return *url.URL with scheme and TLS validation; adjusts WS dialing and health-check logic to use URL fields.
* Add OAuth select_account prompt support to PKCE flow
Extends LoginFlag enum with select_account options to enable
multi-account selection during authentication. This allows users
to choose which account to use when multiple accounts have active
sessions with the identity provider.
The new flags are backward compatible - existing LoginFlag values
(0=prompt login, 1=max_age=0) retain their original behavior.
A macOS-specific sleep detection mechanism using IOKit and CoreFoundation via cgo is introduced, with a fallback implementation for unsupported platforms. A public Service wrapper provides an event-driven API translating system sleep/wake events into gRPC calls. The UI client integrates sleep detection to manage connectivity state based on system sleep status.
The status cmd will not be blocked by the ICE probe
Refactor the TURN and STUN probe, and cache the results. The NetBird status command will indicate a "checking…" state.
When an ICE agent connection was in progress, new offers were being ignored. This was incorrect logic because the remote agent could be restarted at any time.
In this change, whenever a new session ID is received, the ongoing handshake is closed and a new one is started.
* When a peer disconnects, remove the endpoint address to avoid sending traffic to a non-existent address, but retain the status for the activity recorder.
The Relayed connection setup is optimistic. It does not have any confirmation of an established end-to-end connection. Peers start sending WireGuard handshake packets immediately after the successful offer-answer handshake.
Meanwhile, for successful P2P connection negotiation, we change the WireGuard endpoint address, but this change does not trigger new handshake initiation. Because the peer switched from Relayed connection to P2P, the packets from the Relay server are dropped and must wait for the next WireGuard handshake via P2P.
To avoid this scenario, the relayed WireGuard proxy no longer drops the packets. Instead, it rewrites the source address to the new P2P endpoint and continues forwarding the packets.
We still have one corner case: if the Relayed server negotiation chooses a server that has not been used before. In this case, one side of the peer connection will be slower to reach the Relay server, and the Relay server will drop the handshake packet.
If everything goes well we should see exactly 5 seconds improvements between the WireGuard configuration time and the handshake time.
This PR improves the NetBird client's status checking mechanism by implementing earlier detection of client state changes and better handling of connection lifecycle management. The key improvements focus on:
• Enhanced status detection - Added waitForReady option to StatusRequest for improved client status handling
• Better connection management - Improved context handling for signal and management gRPC connections• Reduced connection timeouts - Increased gRPC dial timeout from 3 to 10 seconds for better reliability
• Cleaner error handling - Enhanced error propagation and context cancellation in retry loops
Key Changes
Core Status Improvements:
- Added waitForReady optional field to StatusRequest proto (daemon.proto:190)
- Enhanced status checking logic to detect client state changes earlier in the connection process
- Improved handling of client permanent exit scenarios from retry loops
Connection & Context Management:
- Fixed context cancellation in management and signal client retry mechanisms
- Added proper context propagation for Login operations
- Enhanced gRPC connection handling with better timeout management
Error Handling & Cleanup:
- Moved feedback channels to upper layers for better separation of concerns
- Improved error handling patterns throughout the client server implementation
- Fixed synchronization issues and removed debug logging
optimizes the NetBird client startup process by avoiding unnecessary login commands when the peer is already authenticated. The changes increase the default login timeout and expand the log message patterns used to detect successful authentication.
- Increased default login timeout from 1 to 5 seconds for more reliable authentication detection
- Enhanced log pattern matching to detect both registration and ready states
- Added extended regex support for more flexible pattern matching
The client status is not enough to protect the RPC calls from concurrency issues, because it is handled internally in the client in an asynchronous way.
Deduplicate STUN package sending.
Originally, because every peer shared the same UDP address, the library could not distinguish which STUN message was associated with which candidate. As a result, the Pion library responded from all candidates for every STUN message.
This PR refactors the system information collection code by moving static system information gathering to a dedicated location and separating platform-specific implementations. The primary goal is to improve code organization and maintainability by centralizing static info collection logic.
Key changes:
- Centralized static info collection into dedicated files with platform-specific implementations
- Moved `StaticInfo` struct definition to the main static_info.go file
- Added async initialization function `UpdateStaticInfoAsync()` across all platforms
In this PR, speed up the GRPC message processing, force the recreation of the ICE agent when getting a new, remote offer (do not wait for local STUN timeout).
The health check endpoint listens on a dedicated HTTP server.
By default, it is available at 0.0.0.0:9000/health. This can be configured using the --health-listen-address flag.
The results are cached for 3 seconds to avoid excessive calls.
The health check performs the following:
Checks the number of active listeners.
Validates each listener via WebSocket and QUIC dials, including TLS certificate verification.
Avoid invalid disconnection notifications in case the closed race dials.
In this PR resolve multiple race condition questions. Easier to understand the fix based on commit by commit.
- Remove store dependency from notifier
- Enforce the notification orders
- Fix invalid disconnection notification
- Ensure the order of the events on the consumer side
Fix nil pointer in Relay conn address
Meanwhile, we create a relayed net.Conn struct instance, it is possible to set the relayedURL to nil.
panic: value method github.com/netbirdio/netbird/relay/client.RelayAddr.String called using nil *RelayAddr pointer
Fix relayed URL variable protection
Protect the channel closing
- Clients now subscribe to peer status changes.
- The server manages and maintains these subscriptions.
- Replaced raw string peer IDs with a custom peer ID type for better type safety and clarity.
Disable pidfd check on Android 11 and below
On Android 11 (SDK <= 30) and earlier, pidfd-related system calls
are blocked by seccomp policies, causing SIGSYS crashes.
This change overrides `checkPidfdOnce` to return an error on
affected versions, preventing the use of unsupported pidfd features.
This PR introduces a new inactivity package responsible for monitoring peer activity and notifying when peers become inactive.
Introduces a new Signal message type to close the peer connection after the idle timeout is reached.
Periodically checks the last activity of registered peers via a Bind interface.
Notifies via a channel when peers exceed a configurable inactivity threshold.
Default settings
DefaultInactivityThreshold is set to 15 minutes, with a minimum allowed threshold of 1 minute.
Limitations
This inactivity check does not support kernel WireGuard integration. In kernel–user space communication, the user space side will always be responsible for closing the connection.
- Removed separate thread execution of GetStates during notifications.
- Updated notification handler to rely on state data included in the notification payload.
In the conn_mgr we must distinguish two contexts. One is relevant for lazy-manager, and one (engine context) is relevant for peer creation. If we use the incorrect context, then when we disable the lazy connection feature, we cancel the peer connections too, instead of just the lazy manager.
* Refactor peer state change subscription mechanism
Because the code generated new channel for every single event, was easy to miss notification.
Use single channel.
* Fix lint
* Avoid potential deadlock
* Fix test
* Add context
* Fix test
* Fix HA router switch.
- Simplify the notification filter logic.
Always send notification if a state has been changed
- Remove IP changes check because we never modify
* Notify only the proper listeners
* Fix test
* Fix TestGetPeerStateChangeNotifierLogic test
* Before lazy connection, when the peer disconnected, the status switched to disconnected.
After implementing lazy connection, the peer state is connecting, so we did not decrease the reference counters on the routes.
* When switch to idle notify the route mgr
